Techno-Economic Survey of Banana Growers to Study Constraints in Adoption of Drip Irrigation in Northern Maharashtra

The field experiment entitled “Techno-economic survey of banana growers to study constraints in adoption of drip irrigation in northern Maharashtra” was conducted in Nandurbar and Jalgaon districts, in which six tahsils were selected. This study has been planned to know the reasons for the less adoption of drip irrigation method for banana in Nandurbar and Jalgaon district as well as its impact on various parameters. The socio-economic study was carried out through questionnaires prepared for this study. From this study, it was observed that large proportion banana growers using drip irrigation system had more than secondary education and majority of drip irrigation users had small to medium farmers. From the data collected during the experiment it was revealed that there was decrease in B: C ratio with land holding there was increase in B: C ratio with education level. It was found that maximum i.e. 5.43 qt/ha-cm water use efficiency was reported in small farmers, whereas 5.60 qt/ha-cm water use efficiency was reported in users having education upto degree. The minimum payback period i.e. one year was reported in marginal farmers and 0.83 years were reported by illiterate farmers. The major economic constraint was high initial investment of drip system and high cost of spare parts. Technical constrains reported by farmers were improper design, clogging and lateral breakage. Improper demonstration on field, irregular guidance and supervision were some other extension constraint. The other major constraint was irregular electrical supply. The economic suggestions, technical suggestions, extension suggestions and other suggestions were invited from the respondents to overcome the above mentioned constraints.
