SummaryThe reaction of the soil is one of the most important of the chemical relationships in land classification. The exchange capacity, degree of saturation with bases, and the character of the exchangeable bases must be considered. The content of organic matter is important both physically and chemically. The level of productivity from the standpoint of available plant nutrients must be considered. The use of the socalled “quick tests” should aid greatly in this regard, but much is still to be desired in their interpretation. It is essential that the tests be calibrated in terms of crop and soil conditions.
