Antibody to human rotavirus in cow's milk

A study examined the levels of rotavirus (RV) antibody (a major cause of infectious gastro-enteritis in infants and young children throughout the world) in raw and pasteurized cow's milk, and in milk-based infant formulas. Detectable levels of IgG1 antibody directed at RV were found in raw and pasteurized cow's milk, but such levels were negligible or absent in commercial formulas or other sterile milk preparations. Milk samples containing the RV antibody (but not the formulas) inhibited simian, bovine, and human RV replication in tissue culture and protected mice in a murine animal model of RV infection from infection and disease.
