Effect of paper and pulp industry effluent on hemato-biochemical values in mice

The present study was undertaken to know the impact of paper and pulp industry effluent on animal health particularly on haematobiochemical parameters using mice model. A total of 128 mice of 2-weeks-age were randomly divided into 2 groups of 64 mice each viz. control (group 1) and effluent treated (group 2). The mice of effluent treated were given ad libitum effluent water for drinking. On every 15ᵗʰ day, 8 mice from each group were sacrificed, blood was collected and serum was separated from part of it till 120 days post treatment. The values of different haematological parameters viz. haemoglobin, PCV, TLC and neutrophils, lymphopcytes, monocytes, eosinophils and basophils count showed non-significant change throughout the duration of experiment in group 1 mice in comparison to group 2 mice. In group 2, there was a significant decrease in haemoglobin, PCV, TEC, TLC, neutrophils and lymphocytes. Also, there was a significant decrease in total protein, albumin, globulin and significant increase in BUN, creatinine, AST and ALT as compared to group 1.
