Extract: U.S. production and processing costs for the 1981 crop, net of byproduct credits, are estimated at 23.71 cents a pound for refined beet sugar and 21.85 cents a pound for raw cane sugar. Estimated production costs, on a net ton basis, are $26.41 for sugarbeets and $30.58 for sugarcane. Processing costs are estimated at 15.06 cents a pound of refined beet sugar and 8.96 cents a pound of raw cane sugar. The computation and presentation of 1981-crop costs were changed from those used for 1980-crop costs. These changes include differences in determining a return on fixed costs, the elimination of a return for management and, for production costs, addition of a "returns to owned inputs" section.
