Effects of a glandless cottonseed protein diet on fasting plasma amino acid levels in college women

Six young women (age 19 to 23 years) received diets over a 42-day period in which 99% of the protein was from glandless cottonseed flour and in which the protein content decreased weekly from 14.6 to 9.9, 8.7, 7.5, 6.9 and 6.3 g nitrogen per day. Significant decreases in fasting free amino acid levels took place in the first seven days of the study for threonine, proline, isoleucine, leucine, tyrosine and lysine. Thereafter, no significant differences in these plasma amino acids occurred. Fasting plasma free amino acid levels of young females on a cottonseed protein diet decrease initially; however, they rarely decline below normal values during nitrogen equilibrium.
