Anthropogenic water surface fluctuations contain major negative impacts on the aquatic fauna and flora. Up to now, these so called “hydropeaking” processes were mainly investigated for large hydropower facilities, with the optional design and description of hydropeaking mitigation measures. For small hydropower plants, however, the risk of hydropeaking due to technical problems as well as accidents is given. Due to the state-of-the-art installation of automatic control of small hydropower plants those hydropeaking waves are artificially prolonged in downstream direction impacting ecologically sensitive habitats. Thus, in this research paper novel approaches for the control of small hydropower dams are presented, which are in contrast to the options for large hydropower facilities, the only solution for a requested improvement.
