Role of glucocorticoid in adaptive hyperlipogenesis in the rat

Lipogenesis is stimulated in hepatic and adipose tissue of rats after starvation-refeeding (S-R) and the glucocorticoids (GC) perform an anabolic function in making possible the magnitude of the response. This effect is separate from the role of GC in the induction of the enzyme overshoot, which was reaffirmed. Hepatic glycogen content was reduced by adrenalectomy and not reversed by GC replacement in rats fed ad libitum. S-R reduced glycogen in the intact rats but had no effect on glycogen in adrenalectomized-GC replaced rats; glycogen was increased in untreated, adrenalectomized rats. S-R increased lipid synthesis in hepatic and adipose tissue, but this effect was reduced by adrenalectomy and the adrenalectomy effect was reversed by GC. There was no increase of hepatic or carcass lipid content of ad libitum-fed rats as a result of prolonged GC administration.
