Effects of carbon dioxide anaesthesia and crowding on the susceptibility of cockroaches to insecticides

The susceptibility of adult male American cockroaches, Periplaneta americana (L.), to topical applications of the insecticides lindane and methyl parathion was compared under varying conditions. The use of carbon dioxide anaesthesia to facilitate handling during treatment did not significantly affect the insects' susceptibility to the insecticides. However, the susceptibility of the cockroaches to the insecticides, when confined in batches after treatments, was significantly greater than that of cockroaches isolated after treatment. These results indicate that if, as is frequently the case, poisoned insects are not isolated from each other after treatment, the interactions of poisoned individuals may lead to greater mortality than would otherwise occur.
