The objective of this study was to determine the best soil water tension to maximize commercial yield and quality of broccoli, cultivar Patriot. This research was done in a Vertisol. The plants were established in double rows, 1 m wide. Distance between plant lines was 25 cm and between plants 30 cm. There were six treatments in a randomized block design with four replicates: 1) plastic mulch at 28 kPa, 2) dry, at 45 kPa, 3) semi-dry, at 36 kPa, 4) medium, at 28 kPa, 5) semi-moist, at 20 kPa, 6) moist, at 12 kPa moisture tension in the soil. Water consumptions of 24.5, 27.3, 31.0, 35.8, 40.0, and 45.7 cm were measured in the above treatments. The high values of stem thickness, plant height, coverage of leaf area, number of secondary stems, and biomass accumulation occurred in the moist treatment. The maximum commercial yield was obtained with the semi-moist treatment when 20 kPa tension was applied. The vigorous vegetative growth in the moist treatment did not favor floret size or yield, since these parameters were lower than those of the semi-moist treatment.
