A review of evaluation methods for assessing the safety of non-nutritive sweeteners addresses various current safety assessment techniques and the results reported for toxicological safety of intense (Acesulfame-K, aspartame, cyclamic acid, saccharin, and thaumatin), bulk (mannitol, sorbitol, xylitol, and hydrogenated glucose syrup and palatinose), and other sweeteners in current use. Some of the discussions concern acute, sub-acute, and chronic toxicity tests; carcinogenic, embryotoxic, reproductive, and pharmacokinetic studies; and short term in vitro and in vivo tests. A procedural for safety evaluation for human risk assessment is reviewed and discussed. (wz)
