Chbani, A. | Mawlawi, H. | Etahiri, S.
In vitro antibacterial activity study was conducted on the extracts of Padina pavonica, collected from the shores of El Mina, Tripoli, Lebanon, against clinical origins strains of bacteria (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Proteus vulgaricus and Enterococcus faecalis). The antibacterial activity was evaluated through the disk diffusion method. The results showed that the total extract of Padina pavonica presented an important activity against Pseudomonas aeruginosa, while no activity was registered against Esherichia coli, Klebsiella pneumonia, Proteus vulgaricus and Enterococcus faecalis. Three extracts of Padina pavonica were obtained with successive extraction in petroleum ether, chloroform and methanol. The most active extract against Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was obtained with the petroleum ether. Extracts obtained with chloroform and methanol showed no activity against the strains selected in this study. Terpenics compounds were revealing by TLC only in the petroleum ether extract.
