Dry-milling artificially dried corn; roller-milling of degerminator stock at various moistures

Roller-milling tests were carried out on degerminator stock in which moisture content was varied over a range of 10-20%. Samples weighing ~3 lb were roller-milled and air-dried (295°F in the heating section and 36°F in the cooling section) 1 or 2 days before being weighed for yield calculations. 2 sets of tests were carried out: same day milling and delayed milling i.e. 4-25 days after degermination. A milling moisture level of 16-16.5% proved most satisfactory. Ash, protein and crude fibre contents and dark-speck count of the milled goods were also affected by milling moisture level but fat content and yield are judged to be the best index for determining the proper moisture level of degerminator stock for the roller-milling operation. These results confirm that the milling moisture content should be closely controlled to an optimum level to ensure max. yield of prime goods and recoverable oil and to meet limitations on fat content of prime goods.
