A review of the activities of the FAO in nutrition education and training 1949-1977

An overview of the FAO's nutrition education and training activities since the Second World War is presented. These activities, many of which were undertaken in cooperation with other organizations of the UN family (WHO, UNESCO, and UNICEF), fall into 3 categories: 1) assessment of training needs; 2) technical assistance in strengthening nutrition education and training; 3) preparation of training materials. Although little formal evaluation of FAO efforts has been done, it may be concluded that some nutrition institutes and projects have effectively established policies and programs to improve nutrition, whereas others have not. Failures may be due to shortages of trained staff, inadequate resources and equipment, or to the political structure of countries. In many cases, the training of nutrition workers abroad has not suited the needs of their home countries. National-level training programs to increase the number of extension workers bringing nutrition services to families in developing countries, especially to the rural poor, is needed.
