Selection of Suitable Accession of Ocimum africanum Lour for Herbage and Citral Production

Ocimum africanum Lour is a short-duration crop even among sweet basils, therefore, a suitable substitute for perennial lemon grass. The short duration and fast-growing crops are suitable for essential oil and natural citral production. A total of nine diverse accessions of Ocimum africanum were collected and evaluated at ICAR-DMAPR, Boriavi, Gujarat, during 2020-21 and 2021-22. An experiment was conducted to assess the morphological variation for growth, seed parameters, essential oil content, and chemical composition. Maximum growth parameters were observed in check, while maximum seed swelling index, oil content, and citral A and citral B content were observed in the essential oil extracted from fresh herbage of DLB-7. DLB-6 was observed maximum methyl chavicol share in essential oil. At the same time, maximum linalool content were observed in DLB-3, which is responsible for insect repellency. Overall, chemotypes DLB-3, DLB-6, and DLB-7 are suitable for industrial purposes. Accession DLB-7 can become a viable substitute for conventional citral production.
