Efforts to reduce sodium intake can be frustrating, due to the levels of salt used by food manufacturers in their products. Since there are no standards and often no labeling for sodium, it is difficult to know which brands to choose--and there is great variation among brands. The best way to reduce sodium intake is to avoid processed foods, which can contribute 50% of daily ingestion. It is possible to reduce sodium intake by distinguishing brands or types of foods: processed cheese has 2-3 times as much sodium as regular cheese; instant soup mixes have more than canned soups; tuna in water has less than tuna in oil, etc. Del Monte tomato products usually have less sodium than Hunt's; but Libby's canned vegetables have less than Del Monte; Hormel meat products are usually lower in sodium than Oscar Mayer; and Gino's fast foods have lower sodium content than Burger King or MacDonald's.
