Water management strategies for the conservation of wetlands
1993
Denny, P.
Between 1989 and 1992 many parts of the UK suffered serious drought conditions. This affected wetlands and rivers, especially in the south and east of England, whilst water abstraction aggravated the problem. Local case studies are used to exemplify some of the problems and remedies, and the limitations of site-specific remedial actions are highlighted. Insight into the consequences of poor catchment management is provided from an example in Africa. It is concluded that for the UK, water management should be on a catchment-wide basis. Knowledge of total water budgets within catchments and catchment management action plans are considered to be essential. Water should be treated as a precious resource with its conservation and wise use being a fundamental strategy.
