A Multilayer Theory for Gas Sorption

The model proposed in Part I for the multilayer sorption of a single gas is extended here in Part II to predict the isotherms for each component during the sorption from a binary gas mixture. The model is then fitted to data for a binary gas-sorbent system and a set of constants is obtained. These constants allow the thermodynamic parameters to be calculated and give important knowledge about the distribution and location of the sorbed species, the structure of the absorbents, and the interactions involved when two types of molecule are sorbed competitively. Graphs are given which compare the isotherms predicted by the model with the actual measurements. The fits are much superior to those obtained by previous theories. The theory has subsequently been found to work, well for other systems and promises to “be widely applicable.
