Coronary heart disease: dietary approaches to reducing risks

Coronary heart disease (CHD) remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in the United States, with related costs estimated at $50 to $100 billion annually. Medical nutrition therapy remains as the first line of treatment for lowering serum cholesterol to decrease risk for heart disease and appears to be cost-effective. This article provides an overview of current dietary approaches for reducing CHD morbidity and mortality and includes a review of recent research on various diets including the National Cholesterol Education Program Step I and II Diets. Other research into nutrients and dietary factors, including soluble fiber, psyllium, soy, garlic, and antioxidants, is also reviewed for possible roles in risk reduction.
