Estimation of genetic variability and inter-relationships of quantitative traits for improvement of kabuli chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.)

The present investigation was carried out during Rabi 201314 and 2014–15 in Seed Breeding Farm, College of Agriculture, Jabalpur (M.P.) to estimate the genotypic variability, characters association and direct and indirect effects of characters towards yield and its contributing traits of 68 kabuli chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) genotypes, grown in RCBD with 3 replications in normal planting. Results revealed that height of first fruiting node and number of seeds per plant had maximum GCV and PCV as well as high heritability along with high genetic advance as % of mean under all the environments and number of effective pods per plant in EI and EII indicating ample scope for genetic improvement and selection. Correlation analysis revealed that seed yield per plant was highly significant and positively correlated with total number of pods per plant, number of effective pods per plant, number of seeds per plant, biological yield per plant and harvest index in all environments indicating strong linkage at genetic level. Considering the correlation and path coefficient analysis an ideal plant type in kabuli chickpea would be one with more effective pods and having high harvest index and biological yield per plant. Comprehensive examination of pooled results revealed that most putative lines of kabuli chickpea based on seed yield were IPCK 2004–29, IPCK 2009-145, CSJK 4, NBeG 176, PKV 4, IPCK 2002–29, IPCK 2004-29-1, ICCV 13310, ICCV 13314, ICCV 13309, JGK 27, JGK 12, JGK 23, JGK 1, JGK 3 and KAK 2.
