A literature review provided the basis for recommending iodine requirements for Australians. The review considered: function; body content; metabolism; deficiency in man and in animals; endemic cretinism; dietary sources (including water); human requirements; dietary intakes; supplementation; goitrogens; and toxicity. Recommended dietary intakes are given for both sexes at various life stages. (kbc)
