Effects of pollination control in pigeonpea and their implication

Pigeonpea is an often cross-pollinated food legume with 5 – 70 per cent insect aided out-crossing. Native pollen tube has been found to be relatively slow growing down the stigma, indicating presence of some self-incompatibility barrier. The present investigation aimed to generate and substantiate information on such a barrier. Two experiments comprising 10 and 27 genotypes, respectively of pigeonpea were conducted in the randomized complete block design and data were recorded on yield/plant, pods/plant, pod length, seeds/pod and 100-seed weight under controlled and natural pollinations. Mean squares due to controlled vs. natural pollination were found significant for all the characters except 100-seed weight. Significant reduction for yield/plant and its component traits in a number of genotypes such as ‘NA 1’, ‘T 7’, ‘IPA 7–2’, ‘BDN 2’, ‘UPAS 120’, GT 101 and the like, under nylon net (controlled pollination) indicated the presence of weak self-incompatibility in pigeonpea.
