Estimation of growth by simple measurements in young trees of persimmon cv. Fuyu

The feasibility of using trunk cross-sectional area (TCSA), shoot cross-sectional area (SCSA) and shoot length was evaluated to estimate the amount of growth in various parts of young trees of persimmon cv. Fuyu. In one experiment, nine each of 3 and 4 year old Fuyu trees were excavated and the size and dry weight of different tree parts were determined. Results indicated that TCSA was significantly correlated with vegetative growth. Regression equations were y=701x-39.22 for shoot number and y=145.19x-399.47 for shoot length, r2 being 0.83 and 0.78 respectively. In a second experiment, 70 shoots were collected from each of 3 and 4 year old trees after the cessation of current growth. Basal diameter of shoots, shoot cross-sectional area (SCSA) and shoot length was highly correlated with shoot dry weight and number or area of leaves in that shoot. However, the r2 was higher when correlated with shoot length rather than SCSA. Thus, that total shoot number and total number and area of leaves on a current shoot can be estimated accurately using TCSA and shoot length, respectively.
