Effect of dhaincha (Sesbania aculeate. L) incorporation on growth of direct seeded rice

Burgeoning increase in the world population, particularly in the Asian region has increased the demand for food significantly. In view of this, the present rice crop production under shrinking and low fertile land conditions cannot meet the requirement of farmers as the costs of fertilisers are high. Hence, field experiment was conducted in the wetland farm of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore to evaluate the effect of Dhaincha incorporation on the growth of direct seeded rice during, 2014. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design with ten treatments and replicated thrice. Based on field experiment, it was reported that the growth parameters of were found to be higher in direct seeding of rice with drum seeder + two rows of Dhaincha in between (1:2) and it recorded higher plant height (104.9 cm), no of tillers (27), total number of leaves plant-1 (91) and dry matter production (8965 kg ha-1). Thus farmers would be better off if they adopted single row direct seeded rice alternating with double row Dhaincha as a intercrop.
