The sequence of perception of different stimuli, e.g., light, humidity and odour, from the plants and their background determines the arrival of E. devastans on some and not other plants at different locations. Background light from the vicinity of the host (cotton) and nonhost (castor) plant leaves, perceived at the maximum distance by the leafhoppers, attracted them first and brought them within the range of humidity from the background of these leaves. The insects' subsequent attraction to the higher humidity in the vicinity of the cotton and castor leaves brought them within the range of their odours and away from the cotton leaves in a lower humidity zone. Subsequently, the insects arrived on the cotton leaves in response to attraction by their specific odours. If only the nonhost (castor) leaves were present in the high humidity zone, the insects arrived on these rather than on the host (cotton) leaves in a dry zone.
