Food groups Where do they belong?
1977
Hicks, Barbara M.
According to the author food groups should not be the foundation for nutrition education at the elementary grades. Young children should not be forced to memorize facts without first learning the nutrition concepts that they are based on. In the "guided discovery" learning process, the child discovers facts, relationships and generalizations. Once he has a basic knowledge of nutrient needs and sources, he can develop his own guide to eating. The classic food groups approach has not been successful in nutrition education: the treatment of nutrition content in curricula, textbooks and supplementary materials should be rethought.
