Hydropower plants with low hydraulic head are specially designed for use in ecologically valuable stream pools. In this context there are a series of interesting developments and concepts that aim to limit, or where possible avoid, the typical unfavorable effects on the freshwater ecology. The term “ecological hydropower plant” is often used in this regard. In terms of assessing the real freshwater-ecological influence of a hydropower plant on the stream pool for these sophisticated plant designs, it’s vital to contrast the concrete effects with the expected effects for the project. To do so, a number of the plant’s features should be examined (including hydraulic, river morphological and biological considerations). Key words or product names are not per se suitable for describing the favorable or unfavorable influences of the plant on the river ecology. The use of an innovative building component alone doesn’t make a hydropower plant ecologically neutral. On the other hand, conventional hydropower plants can, with the appropriate equipment and operation, meet the high freshwater ecological standards required. A detailed evaluation based on a number of criteria is vital and beneficial.
