A survey was conducted to determine the type and nature of nutrition education being provided in National League for Nursing (NLN) accredited baccalaureate nursing programs in the U.S. Specifically, the number of hours of required content, the conceptual framework used to organize nursing knowledge, the substantive content, and the preparation of the faculty were explored. In addition, the nutrition education curricula in graduate nursing programs of institutions having baccalaureate programs were examined. A questionnaire was mailed to the deans of 446 NLN-accredited baccalaureate nursing schools in the U.S The questionnaire asked for information on background, baccalaureate program, master's program, and doctoral program. Results showed that nutrition education is an integral part of baccalaureate nursing program and that all participating schools require nutrition content as part of the curriculum. At the graduate level less than half of the schools reported a significant emphasis on nutrition. It is recommended that substantive nutritive content and increased clinical experience in nutrition in both graduate and undergraduate nursing education be revised.
