Magnesium levels in premenstrual syndrome

This study was to determine whether changes in peripheral magnesium levels were associated with symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Ten PMS patients and ten controls gave blood at two or three day intervals through three menstrual cycles. Serum magnesium, luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicular stimulating hormone (FSH) were measured. The day of LH peak was defined as day LH 0. All other measurements were expressed as the number of days before or after LH surge. No significant changes in magnesium levels were noted between the follicular phase (day LH -14 to -3) and luteal phase (day LH +3 to +14) values in either the controls or the patients. No significant changes in magnesium levels were noted either between the controls and the patients during either the luteal or follicular phase. Magnesium deficiency, defined as values below the normal ranges in PMS patients, was not demonstrated in our study.
