A historical survey of the changes in the concept of sustainable development is given. Clarification of the interrelations between food security strategy and sustainability in agriculture are outlined and the possible role of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium in environmental pollution examined. Conclusions as to the more important steps to be taken towards realizing sustainable agriculture are drawn.
