Self-sterile F₁ plants were obtained from crosses between Hordeum depression Rydb. (2n=28) (B256) and H. californicum Covas and Stebbins (2n-14) (PI211038). Fertility was restored after the chromosome number was doubled by treating the F₁ seedlings with a 0.05% colchicine solution. Chromosome pairing indicated that H. californicum may have one genome in common with H. depressum.
