Increased emphasis on biotechnology research and new product development has lead to a rapid increase in the number of biotechnology samples to be analyzed. Many of these assays have required new bioanalytical procedures as well. Many methods were initially qualitative but new demands require them to be run routinely, efficiently and quantitatively. The biotechnology assays are often tedious and time-consuming and are ideal candidates for automation. Many methods have been developed in a research environment and are incompatible with automation techniques and require modifications. The paper explores several biotechnology assays such as HPLC, ELISA, colorimetric, turbidometric, radiochemical, screening, etc. and how they have been automated using flexible, robotic automation systems. It will include what modifications to the method were required for transferring a manual method to an automated method and give comparisons between throughput, accuracy and precision between the manual and automated methods. Important considerations in automating biotechnology assays are that the automation system must be designed for automation as the examples will show. Assays requiring precise timing parameters are usually much improved through automation.
