Association Studies of Root Anatomical Traits for Drought Tolerance in Rice (Oryza sativa, L.)

Rice is an extensively consumed cereal crop, which helps as a major source of carbohydrate in human diet. Rice cultivation needs more than 50% of the total irrigation water used for agriculture. Therefore saving irrigation water without much compromising with grain yield in rice cultivation is an important global agenda. In the present study, we investigated the association between root anatomical traits with 268 rice germplasm lines and its relevance to drought tolerance. All traits were significantly correlated with each other. However, the highly significant positive association found between root cross section diameter and root cortex diameter. Moreover, stele diameter showed highly significant positive correlation with late meta-xylem diameter. From the path analysis, highly positive direct effect observed in root cortex diameter on root cross section diameter. However, root cortex diameter recorded highly positive indirect effect through stele diameter and late meta-xylem number. The low positive indirect effect was observed in stele diameter via root cortex diameter, late metaxylem diameter and late meta-ylem number. These results indicated that root anatomy play a pivotal role in improving drought tolerance in rice.
