Summary The responses of maize hybrids of in vitro doubled haploid (DH) line from two locations were examined over three years. Yield and moisture contents at harvest of fourteen hybrid combinations were compared with that of two standard maize hybrids at locations with different types of soil in order to investigate how maize hybrids of DH origin responded to changes in various environmental factors. The evaluation of the results indicated that the individual genotypes exhibited diverse responses in different years and at different locations. Compared with the grand mean of the experiment, the majority of hybrids performed well below the level of the standard mean, though it was possible to find DH lines that resulted in hybrids capable of producing yields equivalent to that of the standards and a combination whose agronomic value and yield potential were as good as the standard mean. Based on the field performance of the hybrids in Martonvásár experiment, we could evaluate the general combining ability (GCA) of the parental lines. The used DH lines were developed within an in vitro plant regeneration system and were tested in the multilocation performance trials after long years of selection. Up till now only hybrids originated from DH lines developed in vivo have been introduced into cultivation in Hungary.
