A technical review summarizes and discusses the effect of heme and iron (Fe) metabolism on in vivo protein synthesis. Specific attention is given to: the role of heme in protein synthesis control; iron transport and storage with respect to transferrins, ferritin, Fe, and the cytochrome P-450 system; the role of Fe in the etiology of anemia; and mitochondrial uptake of Fe. It is concluded that heme is the most important factor regulating cellular Fe uptake, and that Fe deficiency in early life can lead to irreversible changes in physiological processes that become symptomatic in later life.(wz)
