Recovery of immune response and renal ultrastructure following cadmium administration in mice

Mice were administered cadmium (Cd) in the drinking water in a concentration of 50 ppm for 3 weeks and observations were made at 0 and 6 weeks after cessation of treatment. A reduction in the number of splenic antibody plaque-forming cells following injection of sheep red blood cells was noted at 0 weeks but not at 6 weeks. An electron dense material was noted in the renal proximal tubule cells at 0 and 6 weeks, and alterations in the mitochondria were noted at 0 weeks but not at 6 weeks. Renal Cd concentrations were greater at 6 weeks than at 0 weeks, although the animals had received no added Cd during the 6-week period. It is postulated that Cd becomes complexed in a metallothionein moiety in the kidneys in a detoxification pathway.
