Nutritional aspects of the past and present for peoples of the South Pacific are discussed, with emphasis on various nutrients and current dietary patterns. In the past, these peoples successfully provided themselves with good food of high nutritional value. People planned their food supplies for protection against hardship; this is no longer necessary since international food aid is always available. However, the carefully balanced nutritional status of the South Pacific peoples has been endangered by the uncontrolled introduction of foreign foods. While it is probably impossible to reverse modern trends, countries should seriously consider the health and economic problems which will arise from an increasing dependence on imported cereals, fats, and sugar. The dietary intakes of various nutrients in foods consumed in some South Pacific countries are cited and discussed. (wz)
