Hypocholesterolaemia and cancer?

Data from literature on the possible relationship of low serum cholesterol and colon cancer are reviewed. This relationship is present only in men, whereas that between increased serum cholesterol and heart disease is present in both sexes. A low cholesterol diet may be associated with other etiologic factors contributing to cancer; several possibilities of this theory are discussed. Assuming that cholesterol level correlations are valid for both diseases, the upper limit of serum cholesterol for primary prevention of ischaemic heart disease should be 6.5 mmol/l and the lower limit for prevention of colon cancer would be 4.9 mmol/l. Serum cholesterol reduction should be achieved initially by modifying dietary fat content and increasing beta-carotene and fiber dietary intakes through a liberal dietary addition of vegetables, cereals, and fruit.
