Reproductive Pattern and Mode in the Brine Shrimp

Reproductive performance variables were determined for five diverse strains of Artemia salina, two from the continental United States, two from the Indian subcontinent, and one from Puerto Rico. Significant differences were found through ANOVA for a number of variables including offspring per brood, broods per ♀, offspring per ♀, average zygotes produced per day per ♀ over her reproductive life—span, and total nauplii dry mass output per ♀. In addition, distinct distributional patterns of offspring production over time were found as well as cyst/viviparity proportion shifts with brood number. Regression analysis yielded no significant intra— or interstrain correlations between brood number and offspring survival rates, nor any relationship between the recovery time between broods and either the brood size of the number of broods per ♀. In addition, no significant correlation values were found between any of the reproductive performance variables and the length of time ♀♀ spent in adolescence or senescence. However, the length of time ♀♀ from each strain spent in the reproductive state was found to be significantly positively correlated with the number of broods per ♀, the number of days between broods, and the percentage of offspring that survived to maturity as well as negatively correlated with the percentage of zygotes encysted.
