Nutrient intakes of mother and child in relation to socioeconomic factors and life style

39 pairs of mothers and school-aged children were studied to determine effects of life style and socioeconomic factors on nutrient intakes. 23 white and 16 black families comprised the subjects; mean age of mothers was 39.7 years and of children, 10.7 years. Information on age, socioeconomic profile, and 3-day food intake records was collected through interviews. The mean intake of calcium and the calcium/phosphorus ratio for black mothers and the mean intake of vitamin A for white children were significantly lower than for their counterparts. Low intakes of iron and calcium among mothers and of vitamin A and iron among children were prevalent. Intakes of nutrients by mothers and children were more closely related among the families with both parents present than a single parent, with working mothers than non-working mothers, and with higher income than lower income.
