Micronutrient Levels in the Rice Plant Y Leaf as a Function of Soil Solution Concentration

A field experiment was established to evaluate the rice plant (Oryza sativa L. var Bonnet 73) Y leaf Fe, Mn, and Zn content versus soil solution concentration as a function of time. Rice straw additions were made to provide variable submerged soil solution chemistry. Rice straw amendments facilitated Fe and Mn release to the soil solution. Bicarbonate, hydroxide, and possibly organic ligands from the rice straw appeared to lower soil solution Zn concentration. Rice plant Y leaf analyses suggested that the oxidative status of the rice root system exerted some control over Fe and Mn content. Zinc content in the rice plant Y leaf followed submerged soil solution levels.
