Causes and prevention of diarrhoea in patients receiving enteral nutritional support
1981
Broom, J. | Jones, K.
An investigation into the causes and incidence of diarrhea in 50 hospital patients on nasogastric feeding focused on method of administration, osmolality, patient requirements, temperature of feed, drug therapy, etc. Of the 4 patients who developed diarrhea, 3 did so as a result of drug therapy; the fourth received a feed that was too cold. This indicates that nutritional support need not be accompanied by gastrointestinal complications if individual needs, feeding techniques, bacterial content, osmolality and drug treatment are considered.
