Standardizing nutrition information within husbandry guidelines: the essential ingredients

Captive‐management or husbandry manuals are being developed for an increasing number of wild animals in captivity, predominantly species that are managed in formal conservation‐breeding programmes. Although these manuals are invaluable resources for those working in zoos and aquariums, they vary considerably in style, content and layout. The Nutrition Advisory Group (NAG) of the American Zoo and Aquarium Association suggests a format for standardizing, collating, reviewing and disseminating the diet and nutrition information contained within manuals. In this article the format recommended by NAG is given as a model for husbandry guidelines. These recommendations are also representative of the standards already being adopted by a number of regional zoo associations.
