The relationship of dietary intake to body fat levels and serum lipids was investigated in 112 men and 92 women, all sedentary and middle aged. Subjects were divided into 2 groups: over-fat, that is, with body fat content of 25% or more for men and 35% or more for women; and normal fat. The 2 groups were distinctly different in characteristics but equal in size. Caloric intake was determined by a 2-day dietary record. It was found that caloric intake and nutrient distribution were not significantly different on a daily basis, though the 126-234 kcal per day on a yearly basis could account for a 6-11 kg weight difference between the 2 groups. Normal-fat subjects had lower total serum cholesterol, VLDL cholesterol and triglyceride levels; there were no significant differences in HDL or LDL cholesterol. There was a correlation between total serum and LDL cholesterol.
