Papain Industry: An Emerging Agri-Business

India is the second largest producer of fruits and vegetables in the world. Papaya is grown all over India. Papaya (Carica papaya L.) is one of the major fruit crop among five principal fruit crops in the tropical parts of the world. In 2008–09, the total area under papaya in India was 0.98 lakh hectares giving the production of 36.29 lakh tonnes witha productivity of 37.0 tonnes per hectare. In India papaya is grown largely in AP, Gujarat, Karnataka, Orissa, West Bengal, Assam, Kerala, MP and Maharashtra. In Gujarat it is generally produced in all the district of state except Dang and Banaskatha. India's annual export of fresh papaya ranged between12500 to 14500 tonnes valued at Rs. 18 crores. The total production of papaya in Gujarat during 2008–09 was 7.2 lakh tonnes with productivity of 51.10 tonnes per hectare over the cultivated area of 14100 hectares (Anon., 2010a). Papaya provides food calories, vitamins, calcium and potassium. Fruits of papaya possess good food values; its fruits are of high carotene content and also have milky fluid or latex, which is present in its young fruits and other parts (Singh, 1998). Now it has become popular all over India and is commercially the fifth most important fruit of the century. It comes to fruiting in round the year, gives the highest production of fruits per acre and income next to the banana. Under ideal conditions, apples and grapes give higher income, but no production. It is nutritive fruits consisting iron, calcium, phosphorus and vitamin A, B, C, & E also protein, fat etc. Papain enzyme results in high value-addition. Hence this product can be manufactured and marketed as a promising agribusiness option. Ideally, some progressive papaya grower should undertake this venture as a measure of forward integration.
