Development of an instrument to evaluate critical incident performance

The Clinical Performance Evaluation instrument provides a complete and informative record of the performance of students enrolled in a food service systems course. It consists of columns for "behaviors to be encouraged" and "suggestions for improvement"; the cover page includes space for pertinent scores and recommendations. The critical incident technique of performance evaluation provides objectivity because it is based on actual observed behaviors in critical activities. This objectivity is enhanced by the frequent recording and classification of behaviors. With additional research, the instrument could be made applicable to evaluate the performance of dietetic and restaurant management students in other courses. Students receive immediate feedback with this method. It could also be adapted to the evaluation of practitioners. In addition, this evaluation procedure can be used by course instructors to structure course content.
