Rx for stress: One hospital's approach

A case study depicts an interesting approach to combat psychological burnout' from job stress made at Stanford University Hospital. This approach is an example of what supervisors and their organizations can do to identify and deal with stress. A stress audit was conducted of 129 intensive care unit nurses using a free-response questionnaire to detemine the nature of their stress. Following analysis of the audit results, a stress management program was implemented, including the development of 15 training modules, a number of workshops for dealing with specific stress sources, and other actions. Interpersonal conflicts within the organization at all levels was rated as the highest stress factor (30.1%), followed closely by direct patient care factors (such as patient death or unwarranted life prolongation, (28.2%), and intensive care unit management (i.e., inadequate staffing) (25.4%). Hiring of a full-time nurse consultant as a counselor to nurses undergoing stress effected a decline in attrition rate by 18%. Guidelines for preventing job stress and burnout are presented. (wz)
