The compliance with medicine management requirement given in the regulations adopted for aquaculture [a body founded on aquaculture legislation medicine management index (AMMI)] and in regulations for human hospitals, not founded on aquaculture regulations (NAMMI) in 12 randomly selected fish farms in Norway was investigated through interview by use of a standardized questionnaire. The indexes AMMI and NAMMI were constructed from selected questions. A total medicine management index (TOMMI) was constructed, based on AMMI and NAMMI, to evaluate both categories of legislation together. Total medicine management index was found to correlate highly significantly (P=0.01) with the interviewers' observation of the quality of the medicine management [visual analogue scale (VAS)] at the various farms, and it was thus concluded that the use of TOMMI as a unit of measurement of the quality of the total medicine management was applicable. The medicine management found in the present study was judged as good (TOMMI value was 67%), except for a few cases; the hazard points found were (a) sometimes lack of a visit by the veterinarian before prescription, (b) cases of incorrect storage of drugs and (c) cases of inadequate labelling on fill-over containers as well as transfer of drugs between fish farms.
