The interactive effect of dietary glycerol and corn oil on rat liver lipids, serum lipids and serum lipoproteins

A beneficial interactive effect of corn oil in glycerol diets is indicated in experiments with rats, but the means by which fat-free diets with glycerol cause accelerated induction of fatty livers needs to be further investigated. The data suggest that hepatic lipogenesis might be stimulated by dietary glycerol, speeding up induction of fatty acid desaturases and altering both the liver fatty acid composition and membrane permeabilities. Glycerol, fat free or with corn oil, resulted in increased liver mass. Weight gain was substantially less in fat-free diets with either glucose or glycerol compared with groups combining corn oil with glucose or glycerol. Liver cholesterol and triglycerides increased 1- to 2-fold after 21 weeks in glycerol, fat-free group compared with a glucose, fat-free group. A glycerol, corn oil group showed a small but significant increase in liver total lipids and cholesterol compared with a glucose, corn oil group. Additional findings are reported for serum chylomicra and high density lipoproteins.
