RSM based optimization of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria and nitrogen dosage for enhanced growth and yield of mustard (Brassica campestris L.)

Plant productivity relies on nitrogen (N) fertilization. However, excessive use of N-fertilizers in agriculture is detrimental to soil quality, environment and health. Hence, development of novel approaches for enhanced agricultural productivity while sustaining the environmental quality is indispensable. Agricultural sustainability with improved plant yield can be attained by employing nutrient formulation (NF) containing sub-optimal level of N along with plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR). Present study describes the development of NFs containing PGPR (Cedecea davisae RS3 and Klebsiella pneumoniae RS26) and varying N levels, by general and central composite rotatable design (CCRD) based response surface methodology (RSM) approaches and effect of their application on growth and yield of mustard plant. In general approach, plant application of NF supplemented with PGPR and sub-optimum level of N (0.5 mM) resulted in highest seed yield (5.76 g plant⁻¹). Further CCRD based RSM optimization of PGPR and N dosages and their application on plants enhanced the seed yield to 8.20 g plant⁻¹. The results suggest that RSM based optimization of NF could be beneficial for enhanced plant growth and yield leading to agricultural sustainability.
